Germany is experiencing its wettest twelve-month period since records began. German weather service (DWD) has evaluated its nationwide measuring stations and determined: Since 1881, there has never been such a continuous twelve-month period of precipitation in Germany as in the period July 2023 to June 2024.

None of the past twelve months was a record month, explains the head of hydrometeorology at the DWD, Frank Kaspar. The record is only average. In total, around 1,070 liters per square meter fell in Germany during this period. For comparison: The long-term average for the reference period 1961 to 1990 is around 789 liters per square meter per year.

A look at the DWD national climate archive shows that below-average annual precipitation totals have been observed over the past ten years. According to the hydrometeorologist, however, precipitation generally has ‘a high degree of variability’. The drought of recent years has now made way for a very wet twelve-month period.
