Lifeguards in Mallorca have saved five German holidaymakers from drowning. They were caught in a strong current on Tuesday 2 July. This was reported by the ‘Mallorca newspaper“.

Lifeguards rescue holidaymakers in Mallorca

In the first case, lifeguards on the beach of Son Baulo in Can Picafort recognised in time the danger to four German holidaymakers, who were unsuspectingly pushed further and further out to sea.

“The holidaymakers were not even aware of the danger. Without the intervention of the lifeguards, an accident could have happened,” says Marcos Ruiz of the responsible company Marsave. Thanks to the lifeguards’ quick response, the holidaymakers escaped with shock and high heart rates, but did not need to go to hospital.

Another incident on the beach of Sa Canova in Son Serra de Marina, a well-known surfing hotspot, went smoothly. According to the “Mallorca-Zeitung”, a 32-year-old German was caught by a sudden back current and pulled under water. Ruiz reported: “The current was so strong that we had quite a bit of trouble.” Here too, the holidaymaker was rescued without having to call the emergency services. Another case was fatal.

German tourist dies on Mallorca beach

On Monday, July 1, a German swimmer died on the beach of Cala Millor in the east of Mallorca. According to the “Mallorca Zeitung”, lifeguards noticed the motionless man in the water and immediately pulled him to shore. Despite intensive resuscitation efforts, the 40-year-old German could not be revived. Paramedics, the local police of Sant Llorenç and the Guardia Civil were on the scene.

The incident happened around noon and rescuers fought for the man’s life for almost three hours. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. Why the man lost consciousness in the water remains unclear.
