Restaurant at Playa de Palma collapses, killing and injuring people

At least four people were killed when a restaurant collapsed on Playa de Palma in Mallorca. About thirty people were also injured, emergency services on the Spanish holiday island said on Thursday. The identities of the victims and whether there were tourists among them were initially not known.

The accident happened at Ballermann, right on the beach. The first floor of the ‘Medusa Beach Club’ collapsed on Thursday evening around 8:30 PM. The cause initially remained unknown. Photos and videos showed numerous rescuers at the scene of the accident. The area was largely cordoned off late in the evening.

An eyewitness said opposite the “Mallorca-Zeitung”, that first the top floor of the building collapsed, then the other floors, down to the basement. People were buried under the rubble. Parts of the building are also said to have fallen onto the restaurant terrace.

Other eyewitnesses, holidaymakers from North Rhine-Westphalia, report to the “Mallorca-Zeitung” that rescue workers could only determine the death of a young man. They also saw numerous wounded people, including Germans.

Marga Prohens, the President of the Balearic Islands, wrote on X, She follows with concern what is happening on Playa de Palma. Francina Armengol, President of the Spanish Chamber of Deputies, spoke to X about a “tragedy on Playa de Palma”their thoughts are with the victims and their families.

After the start of the party season, Playa de Palma has been full of tourists again since the end of April, most of whom – unlike the visitors to the English party stronghold Magaluf west of Palma – come from Germany.
