RJ Barrett of the Toronto Raptors is still reeling from a horribly painful loss, as his younger brother Nathan recently unexpectedly passed away.

For the first time since his brother’s death, Barrett released a statement and shared his thoughts with fans.

According to Michael Grange, Barrett said:

“You know, he was…my best friend. I’m always missing him. I still text him. I still call them sometimes, but yeah, just a tough time but I’m thankful for just all the support from everybody. And you know, definitely the Raptors, being able to give me that time, and just welcoming me back.”

Barrett hasn’t played since March 11 due to the death of his brother although the team said he practiced with them on Tuesday.

The Raptors are the 12th seed in the East and out of playoff contention so Barrett could essentially take as much time as he needs to spend time with his family.

At the same time, being with his squad again might be just what he needs and could be healing for him during such a trying time.

It’s been a long, complicated, big season for Barrett.

After several years filled with trade rumors, Barrett was sent away from the New York Knicks and made his way to his hometown of Toronto.

Since joining the Raptors, Barrett has averaged 20.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4 assists.

He seems to fit in very well with the rest of the team, although it’s clear that the Raptors need a fair share of changes before they are truly competitive again.

The season is over for Toronto but there is hope that the future will be bright.

Barrett will likely be a part of that future and he is thankful to be welcomed back by his team after such a heartbreaking loss.
