The Chicago Bears have the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, which has led everyone to expect them to trade starting quarterback Justin Fields and draft Caleb Williams, the University of Southern California signal-caller.

But several days into free agency, Fields is still a member of the Bears, and there is now a feeling that perhaps there just isn’t a market for the 25-year-old.

Adam Hoge pointed out that at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Fields’ No. 1 jersey is selling at a 50 percent discount, and one may surmise that it is a sign Fields is definitely on his way out.

Fields was the No. 11 pick in 2021, and after playing well at Ohio State, a lot was expected from him at the next level.

But he has shown little, if any, real improvement in three NFL seasons, despite having a star wide receiver in D.J. Moore by his side this past season.

In 2023, Fields only mustered 2,562 passing yards and 16 passing touchdowns while throwing nine interceptions and completing just 61.4 percent of his pass attempts in 13 games.

Chicago has been aggressive in free agency, however, trading for six-time Pro Bowl wideout Keenan Allen and bringing in former Philadelphia Eagles running back D’Andre Swift and veteran safety Kevin Byard.

There was a feeling late last season that they were perhaps a high-level QB away from being a playoff team, and now that feeling seems to be intensifying.

Remember that the Bears also have the No. 9 pick in April’s draft, which they could use on an edge rusher or perhaps a tight end such as Brock Bowers, if he’s still on the board.
