Three people were injured when a tree fell on a group of people in Berlin’s Mauerpark. According to fire department spokesman Rolf Erbe, one was taken to hospital. The approximately 15-meter-high poplar probably fell over during the afternoon due to the wind and hit a group, the spokesperson said. She fell in a meadow right next to a bar. If the tree had fallen on the other side, it would have ended up at the flea market, Erbe said. “We were just lucky here.”
According to the Fire brigade There was no severe weather warning for the area at the time of the accident. In principle, however, the following applies: “Be careful with trees”. In some parts of Berlin it was very windy and sometimes gusty on Sunday. “You always have to take into account that trees are sick or old, or are so subject to wind loads that they actually fall over,” says Erbe.
The fire brigade comes with a large contingent
There were several emergency calls, said the fire brigade on Platform A crane, two emergency doctors and a helicopter would also be deployed.
According to its own information, the fire brigade had 55 emergency services on the way. The fire brigade spokesperson could not say why the tree fell. “The fire brigade rescued the injured. Everything else is up to them Police and the Parks Department.”
The Mauerpark is the former stretch of the Wall between Prenzlauer Berg and Wedding – and a popular meeting place. Every Sunday, Berlin’s largest flea market attracts tourists from all over the world to the park. There are also open-air karaoke, street performers and barbecue parties.
The flea market continued as normal on Sunday after the accident. The meadow around the fallen tree was cordoned off with red-white tape, but large parts of the park remained freely accessible. People continued to celebrate.
