BERLIN. AfD party and faction leader Alice Weidel commented with self-critical words on the “democratic base” nomination of the top candidates for the European elections. Opposite JFTV she said: “I think with all this swarm of information it has now emerged that next time, at the next election, we have to look very carefully internally at who we are going to put on the list.”

Weidel did not name Maximilian Krah and Petr Bystron, who were candidates for the first two spots on the list. Yet her statements apparently mainly concerned the two whose scandals had weighed on the election campaign: “Many people have learned from that, and I don’t think it will work like that anymore.”

Weidel: “We want partnership at eye level”

When asked by JF-TV whether the AfD would now try to deal with the ID faction, from which the party was recently expelled to get things back in order, she responded reservedly: “We’ll have to wait and see.” She was “quite relaxed” about what would happen. Weidel: “We won’t run after you! It was too harmful for that. That really got in the way of our election campaign.”

The exclusion was carried out unpleasantly by the previous partners: “Lines were also crossed and I don’t think we can come back from that. If there is no partnership of equals, that is out of the question for us in any case.” She emphasized that “you also have to maintain certain manners.”

Further discussions will take place from 10am on Monday, when the elected AfD delegation is constituted in the EU Parliament. “We will start very soon.” The ID will only advise on Thursday: “We are considerably faster.” They will use the time to “look at different partners”. (fh)
